The Gladdies were still in the contest after week 1, but probably a little behind following week 1 of the fixture against Edgemasters on Saturday. The ground was very wet underfoot, and we elected to bat, hoping to get a ball doing nothing after not too long. But Edgemasters kept a very disciplined line and in the humid conditions, runs were hard to come by. Dan and Rookie played some excellent shots to collect 30s, ably supported by Junior and Lach D. We battled hard, but eventually succumbed to be all out for 156.
With rain about during the week, and a big outfield, its very defendable week 2.
Not gonna lie, this loss was pretty bitter.
While we probably weren’t expecting to win, having only put 156 on the board, to have victory snatched away in the last few overs despite an almost heroic bowling and fielding performance was not the result we were looking for to end 2018. The opening spells were outstanding, and we held them to just 2/49 at drinks, with Jamie taking out the openers and finishing his opening spell with figures of 2/15 off 9. The spin twins again wove their magic, bowling unbroken 12 over spells for a combined 5/60 off 24. The fielding was also top class, with Centejas in particular throwing himself at everything that came anywhere near him.
So, perhaps we could be forgiven for thinking that with 9 overs to go, 67 required and with only 4 wickets in hand, we were probably in front and had a red hot chance at winning. Unfortunately, the cricket gods hate us and Edgemasters remembered they were in 4th grade and you’re better off just having a swing. We didn’t really do much wrong, but they just hit out and finished up getting the runs with an over to spare. Absolutely gutting. Hopefully that didn’t spoil anyone’s Xmas, and please do have a great New Year.
